Salt water rings the town – Alameda is officially an Island
Alameda officially became an island in August 1902. Civil engineers dug a mile long, 400 foot wide tidal canal separating the city from the mainland and linking the estuary to the San Leandro bay. The canal was dug in order to expand shipping facilities in the late 19th century. Alameda celebrated the completion of the tidal canal with an elaborate three-day water carnival led by Queen Tot. I, the Queen of Alameda and Empress of Bay Farm Island.
