San Francisco Clippers Football

The Pacific Coast Professional Football League (PCPFL) operated from 1940 to 1948 with teams up and down the West Coast and one representing Hawaii. It was a formidable league in the history of West Coast football that provided a home for African American players during a time when the NFL was in the midst of a 12-year ban on African-American players.

The team representing San Francisco from 1944-47 was called the Clippers, named after the famous Pan American Clipper flying boat. The SF Clippers drew huge crowds, playing home games at Kezar Stadium against the Tacoma Indians, Hawaiian Warriors, Los Angeles Bulldogs, Hollywood Bears, Oakland Giants, and Sacramento Nuggets. The 1946 season was arguably their best regular season with a record of 6 wins and 3 losses heading into the postseason playoffs. But it also ended with controversy as they were handed a forfeit after the Northern Division title game when it was discovered a “ringer” had played in the game in the place of an officially rostered Clipper player.

UCLA superstar Kenny Washington played running back for the SF Clippers in 1944. Washington would eventually sign a contract with the Los Angeles Rams in 1946, becoming the first African American to break the NFL color barrier, one year before fellow UCLA football teammate and baseball star, Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.
