Women's Fremont Drag Strip
Fremont Drag Strip
The Fremont Drag Strip was the crown jewel of Northern California’s motorsports venues. The Strip was built and opened in 1959. Located just south of Hayward, the 150 acre facility was subleased from the Southern Pacific railroad, hosted a quarter mile dirt oval track and shared the land with a small airport. Wednesday Night Grudge matches put Fremont on the map. Overflow crowds of Bay Area fans brought an unprecedented level of spirit and camaraderie to the drag strip. Don "the Snake" Prudhomme, Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney and Don "Big Daddy" Garlits were just a few of the legends that raced at Fremont. Situated by the bay, at sea level, the early evening dense fog often turned the track into a dicey white knuckle challenge for the racers. The venue boomed during the 1960's and 1970's until it closed in 1988.
