Mt. Tamalpais Scenic Railway

Upon opening on August 27, 1896, the The Mount Tamalpais Scenic Railway was an immediate success. And thanks to its 281 curves—in just over eight miles of track— it was aptly dubbed by locals as the “Crookedest Railroad in the World”.

The railway consisted of one Shay steam locomotive (mostly used for logging), one Heisler engine, six open canopied cars, one San Francisco cable car, and two flat cars. Adventurous passengers visited from across the globe to take in the fresh mountain air as the train ascended from the Mill Valley Depot, winding its way through picturesque terrain to a mountaintop tavern at 2,500 feet.

In 1907, construction of a branch line to Muir Woods was completed, carrying riders to this natural wonder—including naturalist John Muir himself! Unique to this experience were vehicles called Gravity Cars—4-wheel natural roller coasters powered by gravity—that took guests from the summit into Mill Valley and Muir Woods.

In 1929, a fire on Mt. Tamalpias damaged the Railway’s equipment (and a large number of rail ties). The invention of the commercial automobile also impacted ridership, as visitors could now simply drive up to the mountain's summit. The last train traveled up the mountain on October 31, 1929, with the company closing permanently in 1930.
