Our Nation's First Transcontinental Railroad - 1869

Our Pacific Railroad t-shirt commemorates the 150th anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railway in the nation. Considered to be one of the greatest American technological feats of the 19th century, the 1,776 mile overland route linked the United States from coast to coast. Before the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, travel between the Eastern U.S. and the West Coast cost nearly $1,000 dollars and six months of difficult travel by wagon across the country or by ship around the horn. After the railroad was completed, the journey took less than two weeks and cost roughly $100 dollars.

In 1862, the Pacific Railroad Act chartered the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific Railroad Companies, and tasked them with building a transcontinental railroad. Over the next seven years, thousands of workers laid tracks, drove spikes, built bridges and blasted through rock for the two companies as they raced toward each other from their two starting points of Sacramento, California and Omaha, Nebraska. Having struggled past numerous obstacles, danger, and hardship, the two railroad companies met at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869.

This "iron road" linking the two sides of the North American Continent forever changed the direction of history and culture of the North American continent.

"If it is ever built, it will be the work of giants." — William Tecumseh Sherman, writing to his brother on the notion of a railroad to the Pacific.
