Oyster Pirates in Alameda! Local Folk Heroes.

In the late 19th century, the Southern Pacific Railroad leased out coastal land in the San Francisco bay to oyster farmers. Atlantic oysters were shipped across the country by rail and seeded in privately owned tidelands in the bay including the waters near Bay Farm Island. Oyster pirates would raid the shallow beds at night and sell their take at Oakland markets the next morning. For many in the general public, oyster beds seemed to be the monopoly of common resources by privileged capitalists. Because of this, the oyster pirates became local folk heroes and were often ignored by the police. A fifteen year old Jack London with his small sloop, the Razzle Dazzle, was one of these local pirates and was crowned "prince of the oyster pirates".
