Kids Pony Express T-Shirt
Pony Express 1860-1861
For 19 months from April 1860 to October 1861, brave young riders of the Pony Express delivered messages and mail along a 2,000 mile trail from St. Joseph, Missouri, across the Great Plains, over the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada to Sacramento, California, by horseback.
Founded by William H. Russell, William B. Waddell, and Alexander Majors the Pony Express came about because of a great need for faster communication between the East and new settlements in the West.
Using a series of 150 relay stations, the first westbound trip was made in 9 days and 23 hours and the eastbound journey in 11 days and 12 hours. Carrying mailbags called mochilas weighing up to 20 pounds, the swift pony riders rode day and night sometimes covering 250 miles in a 24-hour day.
Against the greatest of odds, the Pony Express operated from April 3, 1860 to October 1861. The completion of the Pacific Telegraph line and the Transcontinental Railroad put an end to the legendary Pony Express.
