In 1848, gold was discovered at the base of the Sierra Mountains near Coloma, California. As the news spread, gold fever kicked in and prospectors from all over the world came to California hoping to strike it rich. The sleepy little pueblo of Yerba Buena soon became the roaring city of San Francisco.
