Avenue of the Giants
“California redwood trees are truly Avenues of Grandeur.”
-John Muir
Considered to be one of the most scenic drives through the redwoods, The Avenue of the Giants is a 31-mile-long stretch of highway through Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
Early efforts to save the ancient redwoods from logging were led by a group of concerned citizens who formed the Save the Redwoods League in 1918. With the support of local communities, private individuals, women’s clubs, and federal aid, tracts of land were purchased which became the foundation for California’s Redwood State Parks. In 1921 Humboldt State Redwood Park was established with over 17,000 acres of old growth redwoods and in 1960, a portion of what was previously the Redwood Highway (old US 101) was designated CA Route 254, and was fittingly named The Avenue of the Giants Parkway.
Today, only 5 percent of the original California redwood forest remains.
