Golden City Brewery - San Francisco
Historic steam beer, popularly associated with San Francisco and the West Coast, was brewed with lager yeast without the use of true refrigeration. It was an improvised process, originating out of necessity, as early as the Gold Rush.
The Golden City Brewery produced this early “steam beer” using local hops and barley. Located on Pacific Street in San Francisco, the Golden City Brewery was founded by Gottlieb Brekle in 1871. A couple of decades later it was bought by German brewer Ernst F. Baruth, along with his son-in-law Otto Schinkel Jr, and was renamed Anchor Brewery. The Anchor Brewery is San Francisco’s only remaining brewery with roots traced back to the Gold Rush era.
