Buffalo Soldiers

Established by Congress in 1866, the Buffalo Soldiers were the first peacetime all-African American regiments in the U.S. Army. In the early 1900s, Buffalo Soldier troops from the 9th Cavalry and 24th Infantry were garrisoned in the Presidio of San Francisco and traveled hundreds of miles on horseback to Yosemite, Sequoia and General Grant National Parks. There, they built the first trail to the top of Mount Whitney and constructed the arboretum in Wawona, which is now considered to be the first museum in a U.S. National Park.

Buffalo Soldier Captain Charles Young was the first African American to act as a Superintendent of a National Park, and was instrumental in negotiating the purchase of private land within the Sequoia Park boundaries. Today, you can visit the Colonel Charles Young Tree in the park. The achievements of the Buffalo Soldiers were all the more extraordinary given the extreme prejudice and racism of their time.

With this tee, we honour the Buffalo Soldiers’ contributions to our nation, and tip our hat to their legacy.
