Bay City Wheelmen T-Shirt
Bay City Wheelmen
Toward the end of the nineteenth century advances in bicycle design made cycling more accessible and safer than ever. Solid rubber tires were replaced by pneumatic tires and the bone shaking velocipedes, and high wheelers gave way to a new “safety” bike. This new bicycle garnered much attention and set off a bicycling craze across the United States.
The Bay City Wheelmen (BCW), were one of many new Bicycle Clubs that sprung up in the late 1800’s in San Francisco. Active in promoting races, the clubs’ fastest cyclists would challenge other clubs throughout California. One of the most prestigious races was the "Great 100 mile Relay Race" which took the speedy wheelmen around the Bay from San Francisco to San Jose then back to Alameda. The fastest 10 man relay teams would finish the route in under 5 hours. In May of 1898, the BCW team won their 4th consecutive showing at this premiere race event, adding yet another trophy to the clubhouse's already impressive silver collection case.
