Kono All-Stars T-Shirt

Kono All-Stars
Beginning in the early 1900’s Japanese American Baseball leagues sprang up in towns across the western United States and Hawaii. In the 20’s and 30’s Japanese American teams were competing at every level playing Pacific Coast and Negro League teams. Nisei Baseball grew from these opportunities to play with and against established baseball stars and to travel across the United States and the World.

In 1937 the Alameda Kono All-Stars boarded the Chichibu Maru in San Francisco bound for Japan. This all-star team of semi-pro Nisei players from Central and Northern California was financed and managed by Harry Kono from Alameda, and coached by Kenichi Zenimura, who for over four decades in baseball made a huge impact on the lives of thousands of players. On their final goodwill tour to Japan, Korea, and Manchuria they produced a 41-20-1 winning record. Four players from the Kono-All Stars team stayed behind to play professional baseball overseas.
