Manzanar Baseball Association T-Shirt
Manzanar Baseball Association
In February 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 authorizing the removal of all persons of foreign enemy ancestory from designated war zones. At the time of signing, the order only intended to apply to Japanese Americans. As a result, over 100,000 Japanese Americans were relocated to 10 internment camps located throughout the Western United States.
The first of these camps was Manzanar, in central California where 10,000 inmates crowded into barracks surrounded by barbed wire. Amid the sagebrush and barren ground, the men and women of Manzanar cleared land for baseball diamonds, built grandstands and established over 100 teams. Baseball was the saving grace for these internees – they played for the love of the game – elevating morale and bringing a sense of normalcy to the camps.
