John Muir Trail
Explorer Theodore Solomons dreamed of a High Sierra hiking trail dating back to 1884 and from 1892 through 1897 he made extended pack trips exploring the Sierras. John Muir, a founder and first president of the Sierra Club had always liked the idea of establishing a long distance hiking route through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. After Muir's passing in 1914, the Sierra Club and the State of California agreed to work together on the construction of Theodore’s High Sierra trail and dedicated the trail to the legacy of John Muir. The final section of the trail was completed in 1938.
The John Muir Trail runs through three National Parks in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California; Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia. The trail is officially 210 miles long with the north end starting at Happy Isles in Yosemite National Park and the south end at the summit of Mount Whitney with a total elevation gain of approximately 47,000 feet.
