Hellcats Football

The Alameda Naval Air Station was commissioned on November 1, 1940 and its primary mission was to supply the ships and stations of the Pacific Fleet, and to “Keep ‘em flying!” from airfields and carriers. It was one of the largest and most important naval air stations in the United States, with a population of 45,000.

In the fall of 1942, the War Department began to promote organized football exhibitions with teams from its military bases playing against depleted squads of regional universities. Even with the surrender of Japan in 1945, much of the American war apparatus remained intact during peacetime, including many of the service football teams. The Alameda NAS Hellcats were one such team, taking on service and college teams up and down the west coast.

In 1947, 20-year-old Joe Perry joined the Hellcats while serving out the final months of his three-year enlistment. That year Perry took the Hellcats all the way to the first ever All-Navy Championship game against the Navy's Quantico squad. The Hellcats ultimately lost the All-Navy Championship title but the 1947 Hellcats team was one to remember, led by future 49er and NFL hall-of-famer, Joe “the Jet” Perry.
